[The HC Link consultant] had a wonderful way of pulling together the bigger community picture and then simplifying the task at hand.
Our HC Link consultant is someone who we feel also plays a mentor role, or more of support role. This feeling is especially fostered by the fact that we can call the consultant with smaller inquiries, in a more informal way.
Mon experience fut très bénéfique grâce à cette flexibilité. Essentiellement, ce fut comme avoir un service de "coaching" à ma disposition!
Food for Thought in South Georgian Bay (planning and facilitating a symposium)
Orillia Community Kitchen Resource Group (strategic planning and partnership development)
Toronto Community Health Centre (coaching and mentoring to prepare and facilitate a meeting)
Le Collectif Franco, Cornwall (instruction on online communication tool to support collaboration)
Harvest Haliburton (planning and facilitating a public event to gather feedback)
A group of community stakeholders in the South Georgian Bay area, including the Georgian Bay Food Alliance, the Wasaga Beach Community Health Centre, the Greater Simcoe County United Way and the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit collaborated to plan a local Food Symposium in November 2013. The group asked that someone guide them to help ensure that they consider all of the options available to them to make the symposium a success. An HC Link Consultant helped to plan and then facilitated an all-day event which involved over 80 people from four municipalities. The forum involved a couple dynamic speakers followed by an interactive planning session to identify initiatives that community stakeholders wanted to move forward on. A series of workgroups developed from the process, focusing on a variety of actions from preserving & protecting prime food producing land to supplying local food to local restaurants, establishing a community food centre, as well as creating community gardens and a local gleaning program.
A coalition of agencies from the Orillia area work to develop healthy eating programs, community kitchen activity, and educational opportunities around healthy eating and the development of food skills. They contacted HC Link in the spring of 2013 to help them with Strategic Planning and Partnership Development. A Community Consultant worked with the group during two half day sessions. During the first one she assisted them to reflect on, acknowledge and celebrate their past successes, and then used this as a foundation for a second session in which they planned for the group's future directions. Participants came out of the sessions with a clearer sense of their purpose, goals and objectives for the next year, as well as having identified their strengths, some opportunities, and potential partnerships. The consultant also provided the group with some follow-up information on building successful partnerships and collaborations.
A CHC staff member who coordinates the Action for Neighbourhood Change initiative in a Toronto neighbourhood contacted HC Link for support. She was looking for assistance with preparing for a meeting that would bring together small groups of local residents (predominantly newcomers who live in aging high-rise complexes) into a larger, unified neighbourhood action group. An HC Link consultant helped this staff and a local volunteer to design this meeting and facilitate a discussion around the united group's goals and priorities. HC Link also provided coaching via phone to support agenda planning for subsequent monthly meetings which addressed things like ongoing learning and discussion about social determinants of health, and dialogue with local agencies' representatives to learn about each other and brainstorm possible partnerships.
A vibrant francophone community in Eastern Ontario was looking to find a tool that would allow them to schedule their events ahead of time to avoid schedule conflicts between organizations hosting public events as well as to allow community members to get an overview of the francophone events in their community in one place. Our HC Link consultant performed an initial consultation by telephone to determine the needs of the community and followed up with an in person workshop presented to representatives of each francophone organization. Now that members understand the tool they will be able to move ahead with a public online community calendar that can be maintained and updated by all organizations involved.
Harvest Haliburton, a grassroots, volunteer committee that supports the development of a local sustainable food system, developed a series of three short videos about local food security and production. They requested assistance with planning and facilitating a public community event to launch the videos and gather feedback from the audience. An HC Link Consultant helped them to develop a set of questions to gauge the level of community knowledge on local food security both before and after the screenings. She also facilitated a large group discussion around the types of potential actions that both individuals and groups could take to increase food security locally.
Wonderful information and [the HC Link consultant is a] dynamite speaker! I learned lots which will help propel the healthy community committee I am working with move forward. Thank you!

I felt unprepared when it came to gathering people from different sectors across the continuum of care to work on an issue as complex as falls in older adults. ...Having an outside facilitator from HC Link, has provided me with great support and guidance in the collaborative process.
Amy Mak, Middlesex-London Falls Prevention Collaborative Chair
Well, we did it! We completed 2 full-day retreats, engaged in many wide-ranging discussions, asked questions of one another, shared our passions, our stories, our quirkiness, and so much more. And we have come away with 4 strong strategic directions to guide us at every level of our work together for the next 3 years, and enough done on our Vision, our values, and the language we want to use to talk about our work to others to move us forward significantly as an organization.
...thanks to HC Link for accompanying us so beautifully and sensitively through the process. We have all learned much of collaborative and appreciative processes with and through you.
Robin Buyers, Green Thumbs, Growing Kids
